Ketchikan's Historic Waterfront Bar
The Arctic Bar has been one of Ketchikan’s favorite watering holes for seventy years. Located on pilings just past the tunnel at 509 Water Street, the Arctic is an authentic Alaskan bar where the drinks are strong (no umbrellas here), the bartenders are friendly, and everyone is welcome. Not much has changed over the years and that’s the way the locals like it. You’ll find them all at the Arctic…young and old, fisherman, loggers, politicians, pilots, and even an occasional K-9.
Our covered deck is a favorite place to enjoy our “Happy Bear Brew,” order lunch from the Burger Queen, and watch the ever-changing waterfront scene: Cruise ships docking, float planes taking off, or people walking the promenade, there is never a dull moment on the deck of the Arctic.
After 4:00 pm the Arctic becomes a lively place for the after-work crowd, which carries on into the evening most nights. Music from the jukebox is turned up a notch, the shots start flowing, and the good times start happening. If you ring “The Bell," be prepared to buy the house a round and make some new friends. Special events and live music are featured periodically throughout the year. An occasional wedding on the deck, bachelor parties, anniversaries, and birthdays have all been celebrated at the Arctic.
Paula is the heart & soul of the Arctic. She’s been bartending in Alaska for over thirty years and she’s seen it all. Since purchasing the bar fourteen years ago, she has worked hard to preserve its gritty atmosphere. She makes the “Best Bloody Mary” and will sell you a “Happy Bear” hat or t-shirt before you have time to finish! She’s a feisty character full of local knowledge who isn’t shy about giving advice; some of which might be useful. A few years back she was honored by the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau with the “Heart of Ketchikan” award for her numerous contributions to the community. Paula spends countless hours organizing fundraisers to help out individuals & organizations in times of need.
So, stop in and enjoy the flavor of old Ketchikan at the Arctic Bar, have a drink and check out our “Happy Bear” merchandise for the wildlife lover!
Like so many who have visited—you’ll be glad you did.
